Sort of a stream of consciousness for tonight’s brawl vs the Leafs

  • Granlund’s stickhandling is very impressing. He makes a lot of quick passes or handles that just make me say ‘wow.’
  • Wild announcers still talking about how Toronto is doing “chip and chase” and “why would you want to turn the puck over” when just last year it was “simple stupid math” that the Wild could dump and chase and forecheck…
  • I was really on the fence about Matt Cooke coming into the season, and I have to say now that he is a really solid third-line player. Took a bad penalty late in the game last week but makes a lot of solid plays. Lots of little things that add up.
  • Coyle made a tremendous deke, would have been a highlight goal if it had gone in. Really nice toe drag to sidestep a defender
  • I know the Wild have a top power play but I would like to see them move the puck more…they set up nicely and look for cross-crease passes but they look a little stagnant sometimes
  • A nice short pass and one timer by Heatley on second PP unit. With Spurgeon and Granlund on the second unit with Heatley, that might could work.
  • Fontaine has some handles. Skating behind the net he has to flip the puck over a broken stick, then cuts on a dome and switches back, then makes a nice feed to the low slot. Not enough room for Brodziak to pot it but some evasiveness by the Bulldog
  • Backstrom plays a few minutes before leaving the ice. It looked like Kadri’s elbow hit him right in the forehead and then he hits the back of his head on the ice.
  • I think Dany Heatley is just inside his own head too much. He seems to be deciding what he’s going to do with the puck without reading the situation. He won’t carry the puck into the zone and he seems too quick to attempt a bad angle pass…he looks shell shocked but I’m not sure what the shell was
  • Charlie Coyle and Joffrey Lupul get five for fighting
  • Fontaine with another nifty skating move, missed a great scoring chance by about a quarter inch
  • Bernier looking very on point tonight
  • Granlund with a sick pass, skating hard from the comer behind the net, drops it right in the slot. Heatley wasn’t ready for it but let’s not get bogged down by that right now…
  • Wild as a team looking a little sleepy in the second period…
  • Two offsides calls on Minnesota and an odd-man rush given up, all in the span of about 90 seconds. Not pretty
  • I don’t think I’ve seen Konopka since he took that elbow in the first period they were saying may have broken his nose…
  • Granlund on Pomminville, “He make right plays on the ice. All the time.”
  • Power Play looking downright awful to start the third period. Have an idea out there!
  • Refs are finally calling some of the off the puck penalties. Wild need a big conversion
  • Purposely keeping my thoughts on Kadri to myself…
  • A five minute major penalty for the Wild. Let’s see them go to work
  • Toronto hanging a 1-3 formation at their blue line, Minnesota has had problems with it all game
  • Tenacious goal scoring play by Coyle, Koivu, Parise
  • Couple of nice moves by Parise and Pommer to win the exra point. What a shot by JP
  • I saw too many late hits by Toronto in this game, glad the Wild can get a win
